A Wintery Journey for Tenor and Guitar
Tuomas Katajala, tenor
Petri Kumela, guitar
Sometimes, when two internationally acclaimed artists share a fascination for the same work, their joint reflection can lead to an insight so brilliant that it feels almost miraculous. Such was the case when tenor Tuomas Katajala and guitarist Petri Kumela conceived the idea, just last year, to perform Franz Schubert's Winterreise accompanied by guitar.
The guitar was a familiar and beloved instrument to Schubert, often used in chamber music and domestic music-making during his time. In fact, many of his songs were first published with guitar accompaniment, delighting a large community of amateur musicians.
Petri Kumela's 2024 arrangements of the piano parts for the 24-song cycle faithfully follow the original dramaturgy, and the keys remain the same as in the first published edition of the work. The result is a unique interpretation where Wilhelm Müller’s poems emerge with even more intimacy and personal depth. Kumela and Katajala’s Winterreise delves intensely into the emotionally moving, inner journey of these timeless songs.
