Richard Wagner’s heart-wrenching lieder, set to Mathilde Wesendonck’s poems, together with the Siegfried Idyll, are Wagner’s two most commonly performed works outside of his operatic literature. It has been said that the synthesis of Wagner’s music and Mathilde’s poetry is the masterpiece born of their unfinished relationship. The songs themselves are autobiographical narratives of suppressed love, which finds union only in music.
French composer Christophe Looten wrote a transcription of Wagner’s Wesendonck lieder for voice and string quartet, which premiered at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris in 2015. This unique version now receives its premiere in Finland.
