G. F. Handel’s Messiah directed and dramatized by Aleksi Barrière and his artistic collective.
Messiah (1741) is exceptional among G.F. Handel’s numerous oratorios and operas in that the four characters in the work do not have names or identities. Librettist Charles Jennens has compiled the texts they sing from biblical fragments, creating a new eternally relevant story and meditation. A group of four exhausted souls awaits an event that could end the injustices of the world – their hope encapsulated in the possibilities opened by the birth of a child. But is the wait over after the birth of the child?
We explore the timeliness of the timeless story in a new ritualized version. The stripped-down space of Tapiola Church allows for an internalized mental theater that Handel invites with his music.
In collaboration with Tapiola Sinfonietta.
