Tuomas Katajala, tenor
Aapo Häkkinen, fortepiano
Ilmari Saarelainen, recitation
Robert Schumann’s beautiful song series Dichterliebe (Poet’s Love) for vocal and piano tells the story of a young man abandoned in love who finds solace and forgiveness through reconciliation. Schumann composed Dichterliebe to Heinrich Heine’s Lyric Intermezzon poems, forming a cycle of 16 songs in 1840. During that “lieder year,” Schumann had a passionate relationship with his youthful love and bride Clara, to whom he wrote hundreds of romantic lieder that year.
Actor Ilmari Saarelainen brings Edith Södergran’s poems to the evening in a personal and captivating way. If Dicherliebe goes through all the colours of love, so do the texts interpreted by Saarelainen.
The instrument for the concert is Aapo Häkkinen’s fortepiano from 1843, with a rich and silvery tone. The fortepiano’s sound ignites quickly and with clear tonal richness. The fortepiano is the perfect instrument for the music of that era and brings a completely distinctive color to the Dichterliebe song cycle.
“Schumann’s era instruments do not match their modern counterparts in stability. Instead, they greatly help express the intimacy, volatility, and ‘heavenly lightness’ of his music and, paradoxically, make it sound more modern.” – Aapo Häkkinen
