Peltomiehen rukous is composed by Jorma Panula and written by Pekka Santala. The work is based on a story where, a farmer encounters a memory that has weighed on his mind. In a memory, the father of the farmer’s grandfather drives three hungry and ragged boys out of his door without giving them food. Farmer finds a reconciliation with himself and his past and discovers the importance of his own work in ploughing, sowing, reaping and repairing. With a renewed mind, he erupts into a hymn of praise.
This important message of justice is still relevant after 37 years. The theme of the story was found in the old cemetery of Ilmajoki, with headstones reminding us of the disastrous years of hunger in the 19th century. The work was premiered in the Kurikka Church in 1984 and has since been performed abroad and around Finland.
Duration 60 minutes.
