Dear music lovers,

During these challenging and even frightening times, we are in need of beauty, community and joy. Which is why we want to offer you intimate lied concerts, guest orchestras, choirs and top international artists at our summer concerts in the medieval setting of Espoo Cathedral.

The main theme of this summer’s repertoire is the composer Franz Schubert, master of the Romantic era. Our opening concert features Schubert’s massive church music work, Mass in Eb major, as well as his smaller piece Intende Voci for tenor and choir. The program also features the beloved song series Winterreise, arranged for tenor and orchestra.

Another important theme is women as composers and interpreters. We have the privilege to hear compositions by Alma Mahler, Clara Schumann and Kaija Saariaho, who celebrates her 70th anniversary this year. Leena Lehtolainen has written a libretto for Timo-Juhani Kyllönen’s monologue opera “Ilona Irti”, discussing women’s experiences and gender equality in modern society.

I hope our concerts will provide you with comfort, strength and moments of inspiration. Without interaction with the audience, the art would not be so meaningful for us all.
